05 January 1920

Born in Brescia.

1923

Began to play the piano and violin.

1924

Studied the piano at the Venturi Institute in Brescia. A few years later, became a private pupil with Giovanni Anfossi in Milan.

1934

Obtained the diploma of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. Continued to study with the same teacher.

1936-38

Participated in national competitions.

1938

E. Ysaye Competition in Brussels where he won 7th prize

1939

1st prize in the International Competition in Geneva. The jury was chaired by the famous Ignaz Paderewski. In autumn of the same year, became per chiara fama professor at the Martini Conservatoire in Bologne

1939-1948

Recordings for Telefunken and Voce del Padrone

1940

Made his debut in Barcelona

1942

Joined the Italian army

1945-1959

Taught in Venice, then transferred to the Bolzano Conservatoire where he remained until 1959. Gave proficiency lessons in Appiano, in a castle near Bolzano.

1946

Played in London at the Albert Hall

1948

Major tour of the United States and several Western European countries

1949

Played in Poland and in several other European countries during the celebrations organized for the centenary of Chopin's death

1952-53/1955-65

Proficiency lessons (during the summer) in Arezzo

1960-1962

Taught in Moncalieri, near Turi

1964

Gave concerts in the Soviet Union

1964

Various concerts were organized in Brescia, with the participation of some of his pupils, to celebrate his twenty-five years' teaching.

1965

Creation of the Benedetti Michelangeli International Piano Festival of Bergamo and Brescia. Three years later change of name: Piano Festival of Bergamo and Brescia

1965

First tour of Japan

1966

Returned to the United States

1968

Left Italy for good, moving to Switzerland, firstly near Zurich then in the Canton of Tessin.

1969-1970

Gave lessons in interpretations at the Helleneum Villa in Lugano

1971-1989

Recorded several discs for Deutsche Grammophon

1972

Made several recordings of Chopin, Debussy and Beethoven. Intense activity as a concert artist

1977

Charity concert at the Vatican in the Nervi Room before an audience of 7,000 to raise money for the Italian Red Cross

1980

Tour of Japan

1982

Accepted to appear on French television in the Grand Echiquier. Played the concerto in G by Ravel.

1987

Charity concert in the Vatican in the Nervi Room to raise funds for the ACISMOM, Order of Malta.

1992

Played the concerto in G by Ravel with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Sergiù Celibidache, (4 evenings) and dedicated repeats to him, after each interpretation, to celebrate his eighty years as a conductor . Three months later, stilI in Munich, they played Schumann' s concerto in preparation for the tour of Japan they were to make in autumn of the same year.

Died in Lugano and was buried in the Pura cemetery.
